I'll be honest, I've been somewhat avoiding MTG since the Final Fantasy set came out. As much as I have never liked the UB sets, I never had an issue with their existence as long as they were kept separate from the major formats, and... that didn't happen. Anyway, point being that I finally decided to jump in and give the set a look by playing this weeks MWM. Usually not a fan of phantom draft events, but this just seemed like a good investment-free way to dip my toes.
Anyone like it? Anyone hate it? Get any nice drafts?

The Midweek Magic, or the FF set in general?
I'm kinda ambivalent on the set; chocobos are annoying and a few things (Vivi) were clearly not very thought-out balance-wise, but other than that nothing enraging.
The Water Crystal is huge for my mill deck though.

Oh, sorry... I meant the MWM.
That said, I actually think the FF set looks pretty nice, and seems pretty fun. I'm just salty at the decision to include UB sets in major formats... guess I'm a purist.
I just realized why I don't like the Phantom Draft MWM... there's no way to get a second draft. I feel like after you get 3 wins it should let you do another draft. I ended up with an Azorius Control deck, which is usually the very last thing I'd ever play, but the packs give what the packs give. Anyway, I got my 3 wins pretty quick, and was hoping to try out another deck, but you're stuck with the first one

Ah yeah, phantom draft isn't really my favorite MWM.Kurt wrote: Thu Jul 24, 2025 10:55 pmOh, sorry... I meant the MWM.

If you want to keep checking out other deck options though I think the FF Jump In is still active.

Phantom draft is a way to show off the set for players who are not enfranchised (in the hopes they become so) without giving players anything special. That "giving players something special" is typically avoided at most costs because WOTC is weary of overgenerosity.
MWM varies in quality. Typically it is just get 3 wins and be done and this time was no different for me. Not particularly fun opening 2x the same bad rare and it was still must play because of the bad quality of the content over all. (Golden Packs are not designed to be drafted so they end up as a bad cube experience.)
